Alpha King is not classified as an IPA, but rather an American Pale Ale. While it does possess some characteristics of an IPA, such as a hop-forward profile and a higher ABV, it is not quite as intense or bitter as a typical IPA.
When we first brewed Alpha King at 3 Floyds in 1996, we wanted to create a beer that showcased the bold and assertive flavors of American hops, while still maintaining a balance with the malt. To achieve this, we used a combination of seven different malts, which added complexity and depth to the beer's overall flavor profile.
The malt bill in Alpha King includes a variety of different grains, such as pale malt, crystal malt, and Munich malt. Each of these malts contributes its own unique characteristics, ranging from sweetness to toasty flavors, which work together to create a well-rounded base for the beer.
In terms of hops, Alpha King features a generous amount of American hops, which provide a distinct bitterness and a vibrant hop aroma. The hop varieties used in this beer can vary slightly from batch to batch, but they often include popular American hops such as Cascade, Centennial, and Columbus. These hops impart citrusy, piney, and floral notes, adding to the beer's overall hop character.
One of the defining features of Alpha King is its balance between malt and hops. While it does have a noticeable hop presence, it is not as overpowering or intensely bitter as an IPA. Instead, the malt backbone provides a solid foundation, allowing the hops to shine without overwhelming the palate.
Having personally experienced Alpha King, I find it to be a highly enjoyable beer. The combination of malts creates a smooth and slightly caramel-like sweetness, which is nicely complemented by the hop bitterness and aroma. It has a medium body and a moderate carbonation, making it easy to drink and refreshing.
While Alpha King may not fit the strict definition of an IPA, it certainly shares some similarities with the style. It offers a hop-forward experience with a focus on American hop varieties, but it also showcases a balanced malt profile that adds complexity and depth. Whether you're a fan of IPAs or simply enjoy a well-crafted American Pale Ale, Alpha King is definitely worth trying.
