When Joe Martin first set foot in Sonoma Valley, he recognized the incredible potential of the land for grape growing. He saw the diverse microclimates, the varying elevations, and the unique soils that could create wines of great character and complexity. With this vision in mind, he planted 22 acres of Chardonnay at St. Francis Vineyard, followed by the first 60 acres of Merlot in Sonoma Valley.
The decision to plant Chardonnay and Merlot was not arbitrary. Joe Martin carefully selected these varietals based on his belief in their ability to excel in Sonoma Valley's climate and soil conditions. Chardonnay, with its crisp acidity and rich flavors, thrives in the cool climate of Sonoma Valley, while Merlot, with its soft tannins and vibrant fruit flavors, finds a perfect home in the region's diverse terroir.
Over the years, St. Francis Winery & Vineyards has expanded its vineyard holdings throughout Sonoma County, encompassing both mountain and valley vineyards. This allows us to source grapes from a range of different microclimates and soil types, further enhancing the complexity and character of our wines.
Our mountain vineyards, located in the Mayacamas and Sonoma Mountain ranges, provide the grapes with unique growing conditions. The higher elevation and cooler temperatures result in slower ripening and more concentrated flavors in the grapes. The valley vineyards, on the other hand, benefit from the warmer temperatures and well-drained soils, allowing for optimal ripening and flavor development.
By sourcing grapes from both mountain and valley vineyards, St. Francis Winery & Vineyards is able to create wines that showcase the best of Sonoma County. Our wines reflect the diversity of the region, capturing the elegance and structure of the mountain grapes and the richness and depth of the valley grapes.
St. Francis wine is from Sonoma County, specifically the Sonoma Valley region. Our roots are deeply planted in Sonoma Valley, where our founder Joe Martin established St. Francis Vineyard in 1971. Since then, we have expanded our vineyard holdings throughout Sonoma County, encompassing both mountain and valley vineyards. This allows us to create wines that truly represent the finest that Sonoma County has to offer.
