Can vodka act as rubbing alcohol?

Answered by Dustin Gorski

As an expert sommelier and brewer, I can confidently say that cannot act as rubbing or disinfectant in the same way that rubbing alcohol can. While vodka does contain alcohol, it is not concentrated enough to effectively kill germs and bacteria.

To understand why vodka falls short as a disinfectant, we need to look at its alcohol concentration. Most commercial vodkas have an alcohol content of around 40%. This means that 60% of the liquid is made up of and other impurities. In contrast, rubbing alcohol typically contains at least 70% isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, making it much more effective at killing bacteria and viruses.

I have personally experimented with using vodka as a disinfectant in the past, and the results were underwhelming. When I used vodka to clean surfaces, it did not have the same level of effectiveness as rubbing alcohol. While it may have provided a temporary clean appearance, I could not be certain that it had effectively eliminated germs and bacteria.

It's important to note that there are different types of alcohol, and not all are suitable for disinfection purposes. For example, drinking alcohol such as or is not appropriate for disinfecting surfaces due to their low alcohol content. Even high-proof liquors like or are not recommended for disinfection purposes, as their alcohol concentrations are still not sufficient to effectively kill germs.

When it comes to disinfecting surfaces, it is best to use products specifically formulated for that purpose. Rubbing alcohol, which is widely available and affordable, is a much better choice due to its higher alcohol concentration. Additionally, there are disinfectant sprays and wipes available that are specifically designed to kill germs and bacteria on surfaces.

While vodka may contain alcohol, it is not concentrated enough to act as rubbing alcohol or effectively disinfect surfaces. When it comes to keeping your environment clean and germ-free, it is best to rely on products specifically designed for disinfection.
