There are indeed different types of IPAs. Over the years, the IPA style has evolved and branched out into various subcategories, each with its own distinct characteristics.
One of the most well-known types of IPA is the West Coast-style IPA, which originated on the West Coast of the United States. These IPAs typically have a clear and crisp bitterness that is often described as earthy. They showcase strong aromas of citrus, such as grapefruit and orange, as well as pine. The use of hops in these IPAs is quite prominent, resulting in a bold and refreshing flavor profile.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have Hazy IPAs, also known as New England IPAs or juicy IPAs. These beers have gained immense popularity in recent years. Hazy IPAs are characterized by their cloudy appearance, which is a result of suspended yeast and hop particles. Unlike West Coast IPAs, they tend to have a softer bitterness and focus more on the tropical and fruity aromas. Expect flavors such as mango, pineapple, and passionfruit to dominate in Hazy IPAs.
Another interesting variation of the IPA is the Milkshake IPA. These beers are brewed with lactose, a type of sugar derived from milk, which adds a creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Additionally, fruit puree is often added to further enhance the sweetness and fruity character of these IPAs. Milkshake IPAs are known for their dessert-like qualities and can sometimes resemble a fruity milkshake rather than a traditional beer.
It's worth noting that these are just a few examples of the different types of IPAs that exist. There are also specialty IPAs, such as Black IPAs (which have a darker color and roasted malt flavors), Belgian IPAs (which incorporate Belgian yeast strains and exhibit spicy and fruity notes), and Brut IPAs (which are bone-dry and highly carbonated).
As a sommelier and brewer, I've had the opportunity to taste and explore various IPAs throughout my career. It's fascinating to see how the style has evolved and how brewers continue to push the boundaries of what an IPA can be. The diversity within the IPA category allows for a wide range of flavor experiences, catering to different preferences and palates.
The IPA style has expanded and diversified over the years, offering beer enthusiasts a plethora of options to choose from. Whether you prefer the classic West Coast-style bitterness, the juicy and tropical notes of Hazy IPAs, or the creamy sweetness of Milkshake IPAs, there is an IPA out there for everyone to enjoy.
