The Volcan de Mi Tierra distillery is located in the Jalisco region of Mexico, at the foot of the Tequila volcano. This volcano erupted approximately 200,000 years ago, and its lava flows shaped the landscape and created the fertile soil that surrounds the distillery. The distillery is situated amidst vast fields of blue weber agave, which patiently grow in this incredibly rich volcanic soil.
I had the opportunity to visit the Volcan de Mi Tierra distillery during a trip to Mexico, and I was in awe of the stunning natural beauty that surrounded it. As I approached the distillery, I could see the majestic Tequila volcano in the distance, standing tall and proud. The fields of blue weber agave stretched out before me, their deep green leaves contrasting beautifully with the black volcanic soil.
Stepping inside the distillery, I was immediately struck by the sense of history and tradition that permeated the air. The distillery itself was a beautiful blend of modern architecture and traditional Mexican design elements. The attention to detail was evident in every aspect, from the meticulously crafted copper stills to the carefully curated oak barrels lining the aging rooms.
As I took a tour of the distillery, I learned about the unique terroir that contributes to the distinctive flavors of Volcan de Mi Tierra tequila. The volcanic soil, rich in minerals and nutrients, imparts a unique character to the agave plants. This, in turn, translates into the final product, giving it a depth and complexity that is truly unparalleled.
The distillery's location at the foot of the Tequila volcano also plays a significant role in the production process. The volcanic ash and rock fragments that were deposited during past eruptions act as a natural filter, purifying the water used in the production of tequila. This water, sourced from underground springs, is vital in ensuring the quality and purity of the final product.
One of the highlights of my visit was witnessing the harvesting of the blue weber agave. The skilled jimadores, or agave harvesters, carefully selected only the ripest and most mature plants for harvest. With their sharp tools, they skillfully removed the agave leaves to reveal the heart, or piña, of the plant. These piñas would later be roasted and crushed to extract the sweet juice, which would then be fermented and distilled to create the tequila.
