Why are cigarillos so cheap?

Answered by Michael Blake

As an expert sommelier and brewer, I have encountered various types of and cigarillos throughout my career. One thing that stands out about cigarillos is their affordability. Unlike premium hand-rolled cigars, cigarillos are generally much cheaper. There are several reasons why cigarillos are priced more affordably, and I'll delve into them below.

1. Machine-Made Production: One of the key factors contributing to the lower cost of cigarillos is their production method. Unlike hand-rolled cigars, which require skilled craftsmen to meticulously roll each leaf, cigarillos are typically machine-made. This automated production process significantly reduces labor costs, allowing manufacturers to produce a higher volume of cigarillos at a lower cost per unit.

2. Shorter Aging Process: Premium cigars are often aged for extended periods to develop complex flavors and aromas. However, cigarillos are typically intended for immediate consumption and are not aged for as long. This shorter aging process reduces production time and costs, as manufacturers don't need to invest as much in storing and aging tobacco leaves.

3. Bulk Packaging: Cigarillos are often packaged in larger quantities compared to premium cigars. Instead of being individually wrapped or presented in ornate boxes, cigarillos are commonly sold in bundles or packs. This bulk packaging reduces packaging costs and also allows manufacturers to streamline the production process.

4. Tobacco Quality: While there are exceptions, cigarillos generally use lower-grade tobacco compared to premium cigars. Higher-grade tobacco leaves are often reserved for hand-rolled cigars, as they are considered to offer superior flavor profiles. By using lower-grade tobacco, manufacturers can further reduce production costs, making cigarillos more affordable for consumers.

5. Limited Aging Potential: Unlike premium cigars, cigarillos are not typically stored in humidors for long periods. Cigarillos are often smoked in large quantities and have a shorter shelf-life. As a result, manufacturers don't need to invest in expensive storage facilities or use premium tobacco that ages well over time.

It's worth noting that not all cigarillos are marketed as such. Many inexpensive cigarillos are simply branded under different names, without explicitly using the term “cigarillo.” This marketing strategy aims to appeal to a broader consumer base and may contribute to the perception that cigarillos are cheaper than premium cigars.

The affordability of cigarillos can be attributed to factors such as machine-made production, shorter aging processes, bulk packaging, the use of lower-grade tobacco, and limited aging potential. These factors collectively contribute to lower production costs, allowing manufacturers to offer cigarillos at a more affordable price point compared to premium hand-rolled cigars.
