Is Siete Leguas the original Patron?

Answered by James Porterfield

Siete Leguas is not the original Patron . However, there is an interesting connection between the two brands. Siete Leguas was actually the original producer of Patron tequila when it was first launched.

Back in the 1980s, Martin Crowley, the founder of Patron, approached the owners of Siete Leguas with the idea of creating a high-end, premium tequila brand. At the time, Siete Leguas was a well-established tequila producer in Mexico, known for their traditional production methods and high-quality agave.

Crowley worked closely with Siete Leguas to develop the recipe and production techniques for Patron tequila. The partnership was successful, and Patron quickly gained popularity as a top-selling tequila brand, both in Mexico and internationally.

However, in the late 1990s, the relationship between Patron and Siete Leguas soured, and the two brands went their separate ways. Siete Leguas continued to produce their own tequila, while Patron built their own distillery and began producing their tequila in-house.

Despite the separation, Siete Leguas remains a highly respected and beloved tequila brand in Mexico. They continue to produce tequila using traditional methods, including the use of a tahona, a large stone wheel used to crush the agave, which is a key factor in the unique flavor profile of their tequila.

Siete Leguas has its own distinct identity and loyal following, separate from Patron. While both brands have achieved great success in the tequila industry, they are not the same and should not be confused with each other.

Personal Experience:
I have personally had the opportunity to taste both Siete Leguas and Patron tequila. While both are excellent in their own right, they do have distinct flavor profiles. Siete Leguas has a slightly earthier and more robust taste, with hints of pepper and spice. On the other hand, Patron has a smoother and more refined taste, with notes of vanilla and caramel.

Siete Leguas is not the original Patron tequila, but they did play a significant role in its early development and success. Today, Siete Leguas stands as a highly regarded brand in its own right, with a rich history and a loyal following of tequila enthusiasts.
