What is a good whiskey score?

Answered by Amado Berg

As a sommelier and brewer, I have had the opportunity to taste and evaluate a wide range of whiskies. When it comes to scoring whiskies, there are a few key factors to consider.

First and foremost, it's important to note that the overall quality of whiskies produced today has significantly improved. Gone are the days when the majority of whiskies were subpar or even downright awful. Nowadays, even the lower-rated whiskies are generally of decent quality.

With that being said, a good score typically falls within the range of 80-89. This range represents whiskies that are well-made, enjoyable, and exhibit a good balance of flavors. These whiskies may not have the complexity or depth of higher-scored whiskies, but they are still considered to be of above-average quality.

As we move towards the upper end of the rating scale, whiskies in the 90-94 range are considered excellent. These whiskies possess a greater level of complexity, with a wide range of flavors that are well-integrated. They may also exhibit a certain level of uniqueness or character that sets them apart from the crowd. These are whiskies that whisky enthusiasts would highly recommend and are often seen as a step above the average.

Moving into the 95-96 range, we enter the territory of exceptional whiskies. These whiskies are truly outstanding, showcasing an exceptional level of craftsmanship and flavor. They offer a depth and complexity that is rare to find, with an array of flavors that are exquisitely balanced. Whiskies in this range are often highly sought after and can be considered the pinnacle of quality.

Whiskies that score 97 or above are the crème de la crème. These are the unicorns of the whisky world, extremely rare and highly coveted. These whiskies are in a league of their own, offering an unparalleled drinking experience. They possess a level of complexity, depth, and balance that is truly extraordinary. It's worth noting that whiskies in this range are few and far between, as achieving such a high score requires a combination of exceptional craftsmanship, unique flavors, and an overall standout quality.

A good whiskey score falls within the 80-89 range, representing whiskies of above-average quality. As we move up the rating scale, we encounter whiskies that are excellent (90-94), exceptional (95-96), and truly outstanding (97+). While very few whiskies reach the 97+ level, the majority of whiskies produced today are of decent quality, making it an exciting time for whisky enthusiasts.
