Do stress balls even work?

Answered by Bill Hernandez

As an expert sommelier and brewer, I have encountered various situations that have caused stress and anxiety throughout my career. While stress balls are not directly related to my expertise, I can offer some insights into their effectiveness based on personal experiences and knowledge.

Stress balls are small, squeezable objects typically made of foam or rubber. They are designed to be held in the hand and squeezed repeatedly, providing a tactile and sensory experience. The repetitive motion of squeezing the ball can potentially offer a temporary relief from situational or state anxiety. By focusing on the sensation and movement, it can divert attention away from the stressor at hand.

In my own experience, I have found stress balls to be somewhat effective in providing momentary distraction during high-stress situations. For example, when dealing with a particularly difficult customer or managing a hectic event, squeezing a stress ball helped me momentarily shift my focus and alleviate some of the tension. It acted as a physical outlet for my stress and provided a brief respite from the overwhelming emotions.

However, it is important to note that stress balls alone may not be a comprehensive solution for long-term or general anxiety, also known as trait anxiety. While they can be part of a broader relaxation strategy, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness techniques, or physical activity, they may not address the underlying causes of anxiety.

Stress balls primarily offer a sensory distraction, and their effectiveness can vary from person to person. Some individuals may find them helpful in managing stress, while others may not experience the same benefits. It is important to explore and identify what relaxation techniques work best for each individual.

To further illustrate this, I recall a time when I was feeling overwhelmed with the responsibilities of managing a busy bar during a major event. I grabbed a stress ball from my desk drawer and squeezed it whenever I felt the stress building up. While it provided a brief sense of relief, I also realized that I needed additional strategies to address the root causes of my anxiety. Taking short breaks, practicing deep breathing exercises, and seeking support from my team were all essential in managing my overall stress levels.

Stress balls can offer temporary relief from situational or state anxiety by providing a sensory distraction. However, they may not be the sole solution for long-term or general anxiety. Incorporating stress balls into a broader relaxation strategy that includes other techniques and practices can be more effective in managing anxiety. It is crucial to explore and identify what works best for each individual in order to find sustainable solutions for managing stress and anxiety.
