As an expert sommelier and brewer, I can confidently say that the misconception that bourbon must be made in Kentucky is just that – a misconception. While it is true that the term “Kentucky Bourbon” refers specifically to bourbon produced in Kentucky, bourbon itself can be made in any of the 50 American states.
Bourbon is a type of whiskey that is primarily made from corn and aged in charred white oak barrels. The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits state that for a whiskey to be labeled as bourbon, it must meet certain criteria. These criteria include being made in the United States, having a mash bill that consists of at least 51% corn, being distilled at no more than 160 proof, entering the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof, and being bottled at no less than 80 proof.
Nowhere in these criteria does it state that bourbon must be made in Kentucky. In fact, bourbon can be made in any state as long as it meets these requirements. There are many distilleries across the United States, outside of Kentucky, that produce excellent bourbon.
One example is the Tuthilltown Spirits distillery in New York. They have been producing bourbon since 2006 and have gained recognition for their high-quality spirits. Another example is the Balcones Distilling in Texas, which has won numerous awards for their bourbon.
I have personally had the opportunity to taste bourbon from various states, including Kentucky, Tennessee, New York, and Texas. Each one had its own unique flavor profile and characteristics, showcasing the regional differences in production methods and ingredients. It is fascinating to see how bourbon can vary from state to state, offering a diverse range of options for whiskey enthusiasts.
So, while “Kentucky Bourbon” may be a term used to specifically denote bourbon made in Kentucky, it is important to remember that bourbon itself can be produced in any state in the United States. The key is to look for the criteria outlined by the Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits to ensure you are getting a true bourbon experience, regardless of where it is made.
