Craft beer has exploded in popularity in recent years, and Michigan is no exception to this trend. In fact, Michigan has a thriving craft beer scene, with numerous breweries scattered throughout the state. From small, independent operations to larger, well-established breweries, Michigan offers a diverse range of craft beers for beer enthusiasts to enjoy.
One of the most well-known and beloved breweries in Michigan is Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo. Ask any Michigander about local beer, and Bell's is likely to be mentioned. Founded in 1985, Bell's Brewery has been a pioneer in the craft beer industry, producing a wide array of high-quality beers that have garnered national recognition. With its flagship beer, Two Hearted Ale, consistently ranking among the top beers in the country, Bell's has become synonymous with Michigan craft beer.
But Bell's is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to craft beer in Michigan. The state is home to over 400 breweries, each offering its own unique flavors and styles. From Detroit's bustling urban breweries to the quaint, small-town operations scattered throughout the state, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
One of my personal favorites is Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids. Known for its bold and flavorful beers, Founders has gained a devoted following for its highly acclaimed beers such as KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout) and All Day IPA. The brewery's taproom is a lively and welcoming space, and it's always a treat to sample their latest creations.
Another standout brewery in Michigan is Short's Brewing Company in Bellaire. Short's is known for its creativity and innovation, constantly pushing the boundaries of traditional beer styles. With a rotating lineup of seasonal and specialty beers, Short's offers a truly unique drinking experience. I have had the pleasure of trying their Key Lime Pie beer, and it was like nothing I had ever tasted before – a perfect balance of tartness and sweetness.
What sets Michigan craft beer apart is the state's abundant natural resources, which contribute to the quality and flavor of the beer. Michigan is surrounded by the Great Lakes, which provide a fresh water source that is essential for brewing. Additionally, the state's agricultural industry produces a wide variety of ingredients, such as hops and barley, that are used in the brewing process. This local sourcing of ingredients adds a distinct Michigan flavor to the beers.
In addition to the quality of the beer, Michigan's craft breweries also contribute to the local economy and community. Many of these breweries are small, family-owned businesses that are deeply rooted in their communities. They often support local farmers by sourcing their ingredients locally and contribute to the tourism industry by attracting visitors to their taprooms. This support of the local economy is another reason why Michigan craft beer is so special.
So, whether you're a Michigan resident or just visiting the state, I highly recommend exploring the craft beer scene. Take a road trip and visit a few breweries along the way, or simply stop by a local craft beer store to sample some of the many offerings. From traditional styles to experimental brews, Michigan has it all. Cheers to the craft beer revolution in the Great Lakes State!
