Who owns Dog Point Vineyard?

Answered by Paul Bowser

Dog Point Vineyard is owned by Ivan and Margaret Sutherland as well as James and Wendy Healy. The story of how they came to own and operate the vineyard is quite interesting. Ivan and James had previously worked together at Cloudy Bay, another well-known winery in Marlborough, New Zealand. They both had a passion for making exceptional wines and wanted to create something of their own.

After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James decided to start their own venture. They found the perfect property in the Wairau Valley of Marlborough and purchased it in 2002. This property would become the foundation of Dog Point Vineyard. The name “Dog Point” actually comes from a nearby landmark, named Dog Point Road, which was originally used by shepherds to muster sheep.

Ivan and James were fortunate to have their wives, Margaret and Wendy, fully on board with their new endeavor. Margaret had a background in viticulture, and Wendy had experience in the industry as well. Their combined expertise and passion for wine made them a formidable team.

One of the unique aspects of Dog Point Vineyard is its commitment to organic and sustainable farming practices. The owners strive to minimize their impact on the environment and produce wines that are a true reflection of the land. They believe that by working in harmony with nature, they can create wines that are both delicious and respectful of the environment.

I had the pleasure of visiting Dog Point Vineyard and was truly impressed by the attention to detail and care that goes into every aspect of their operation. The vineyard itself is beautifully maintained, and the winery is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for winemaking.

The wines produced by Dog Point Vineyard are exceptional. They are known for their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. The Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and vibrant, with notes of citrus and tropical fruit. The Chardonnay is elegant and balanced, with flavors of stone fruit and a hint of oak. The Pinot Noir is a standout, with layers of red fruit, earthy undertones, and a silky texture.

Dog Point Vineyard has gained international recognition for their wines, and it's no wonder why. The owners' dedication to quality and their deep understanding of the terroir of Marlborough shines through in every bottle.

Dog Point Vineyard is owned by Ivan and Margaret Sutherland, as well as James and Wendy Healy. Their passion for wine and commitment to sustainable farming practices have made them a force to be reckoned with in the New Zealand wine industry. I highly recommend trying their wines if you have the opportunity.
