Hyde de Villaine, also known as HdV, is a unique family venture that brings together the expertise and passion of two renowned wine families – the Hyde family of Napa Valley and the de Villaine family of Burgundy, France. The ownership of Hyde de Villaine is shared between the Hyde family, represented by Larry and Chris Hyde, and the de Villaine family, represented by Aubert and Pamela de Villaine.
Aubert de Villaine, one of Burgundy's most recognized individuals, is widely respected for his role as co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, a prestigious and highly sought-after winery in Burgundy. His dedication to producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Burgundy has garnered him immense respect in the wine industry.
Aubert de Villaine is married to Pamela F. de Villaine, who is a cousin of the Hyde family. The Hyde family, led by Larry and Chris Hyde, has been involved in grape growing and winemaking in the renowned Carneros region of Napa Valley for over four decades. They are known for their meticulous attention to detail and commitment to sustainable farming practices.
The partnership between the Hyde and de Villaine families was formed out of a shared vision and passion for producing exceptional wines that showcase the best of both Napa Valley and Burgundy. The collaboration allows for the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and resources between the two families, resulting in wines that reflect the unique characteristics of their respective regions.
Hyde de Villaine focuses on crafting limited-production, estate-grown wines that express the terroir of their vineyards. They strive to create wines of finesse, elegance, and balance, drawing inspiration from both the Old World winemaking traditions of Burgundy and the innovative spirit of Napa Valley.
I had the privilege of tasting some of the wines produced by Hyde de Villaine during a visit to Napa Valley. The Chardonnay, with its vibrant acidity and layers of citrus and stone fruit flavors, was a standout. It showcased the elegance and precision that Burgundian winemaking is known for, while also capturing the richness and opulence that Napa Valley can offer.
The red wines, particularly the Cabernet Sauvignon, displayed a beautiful integration of ripe fruit, structured tannins, and a sense of place. It was evident that the Hyde de Villaine wines were crafted with meticulous care and a deep understanding of the vineyards they come from.
Hyde de Villaine is a joint venture between the Hyde family of Napa Valley and the de Villaine family of Burgundy. This partnership brings together the expertise and passion of two esteemed wine families, resulting in wines that exemplify the unique characteristics of both Napa Valley and Burgundy.
