What is the best Primitivo wine?

Answered by Louis Krause

As an expert sommelier and brewer, I have had the opportunity to taste and explore a wide range of Primitivo wines. While it is subjective to determine the “best” Primitivo , I can certainly share some of my personal favorites and provide insight into what makes them exceptional.

1. Masseria Li Veli Primonero Primitivo: This wine hails from the Puglia region of Italy, where Primitivo thrives. It showcases the classic characteristics of the grape, with deep flavors of blackberry, plum, and spice. The wine is well-structured with a velvety texture and a long, satisfying finish. I particularly appreciate its balance of fruitiness and complexity.

2. Zenato Alanera Primitivo: This Primitivo comes from the Veneto region of Italy, where the grape is gaining popularity. It is a blend of Primitivo and other local varieties, resulting in a wine with layers of flavor and a unique character. The Zenato Alanera exhibits intense aromas of dark berries, chocolate, and vanilla. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, with smooth tannins and a persistent finish.

3. Seghesio Sonoma County Primitivo: Moving across the Atlantic to California, Seghesio is renowned for its Zinfandel wines, which are genetically identical to Primitivo. Their Sonoma County Primitivo is a standout, offering a California interpretation of the grape. It showcases ripe fruit flavors of black cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, along with hints of spice and oak. The wine is well-structured, with a nice balance of acidity and tannins.

4. Cantele Primitivo Salento: Another excellent Primitivo from Puglia, Cantele's Salento showcases the region's warm climate and its impact on the grape. This wine exhibits an abundance of ripe, dark fruit flavors, such as blackberry and plum, with a touch of Mediterranean herbs. It is full-bodied and velvety, with smooth tannins and a persistent finish. I find it to be a great representation of the terroir and the grape's potential in this region.

5. Azienda Agricola Schiena Vini Primitivo di Manduria: Primitivo di Manduria is a subregion within Puglia that is known for producing some of the finest Primitivo wines. Azienda Agricola Schiena Vini offers a stellar example of this style. Their Primitivo di Manduria is characterized by its intense aromas of ripe berries, chocolate, and spices. On the palate, it is rich and powerful, with velvety tannins and a long, satisfying finish. It truly encapsulates the bold and robust nature of Primitivo.

These are just a few examples of exceptional Primitivo wines that have left a lasting impression on me. It's worth noting that the “best” Primitivo wine can vary depending on personal preferences, as well as the specific vintage and producer. I encourage wine enthusiasts to explore different bottles and discover their own favorite Primitivo wines, as each can offer a unique and enjoyable experience.
