Do people drink after prom?

Answered by Randall Whitlock

As an expert sommelier and brewer, I have had the opportunity to observe and experience various social gatherings and events where consumption is prevalent. When it comes to prom and post-prom celebrations, it is not uncommon for teenagers to engage in drinking alcohol. In fact, according to a survey conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA), approximately 53% of teens who admitted to drinking during or after prom reported consuming four or more alcoholic beverages.

Prom and graduation season is often seen as a rite of passage for many teenagers, and it is a time when they want to celebrate and let loose after years of hard work. Unfortunately, for some, this celebration involves the consumption of alcohol. The allure of parties, peer pressure, and the desire to fit in can often lead teenagers to make questionable decisions regarding alcohol consumption.

From personal experiences and conversations with friends and acquaintances, I have witnessed instances where teenagers indulge in drinking after prom. It is often seen as a way to enhance the excitement and celebrate the end of high school. However, it is important to note that not all teenagers engage in drinking after prom. There are many who choose to celebrate in alternative ways, such as hosting alcohol-free parties or participating in organized events.

It is concerning that the AAA survey found that 31% of surveyed teens aged 16-19 reported either themselves or their friends would use drugs or alcohol during prom and graduation season. This highlights a significant issue that needs to be addressed. It is crucial for parents, educators, and the community as a whole to emphasize the importance of responsible decision-making and the potential consequences of underage drinking.

While it is important to acknowledge that drinking after prom does occur, it is equally important to focus on prevention and education. Schools and parents can play a pivotal role in organizing alcohol-free events, providing alternative activities, and educating teenagers about the potential risks and dangers associated with alcohol consumption at a young age.

Drinking after prom is a reality for many teenagers. However, it is essential to address this issue by promoting responsible decision-making, providing alternative activities, and educating teenagers about the potential consequences of underage drinking. By working together as a community, we can create a safer and more enjoyable prom and graduation season for all teenagers.
