What do you see as your civic responsibility to your community as it relates to alcohol use and consumption?

Answered by Michael Blake

As a sommelier and brewer, I believe that my civic responsibility to my community as it relates to use and consumption goes beyond simply providing quality beverages. It is important for me to advocate for policies and interventions that promote responsible alcohol consumption and prevent alcohol abuse.

First and foremost, I see it as my responsibility to educate the community about alcohol and its effects. This includes providing information about the different types of alcoholic beverages, their ingredients, and their alcohol content. By sharing my knowledge and expertise, I can help individuals make informed decisions about what and how much they choose to drink.

One way I fulfill this responsibility is by organizing educational events and tastings. These events provide an opportunity for individuals to learn about the history and production of various alcoholic beverages, as well as how to appreciate them responsibly. By teaching people about the nuances of taste and the importance of moderation, I hope to foster a culture of responsible alcohol consumption within my community.

In addition to education, I also believe in promoting policies that support responsible drinking. This includes advocating for laws and regulations that discourage underage drinking and excessive alcohol consumption. For example, I support initiatives that increase the legal drinking age and enforce stricter penalties for those who provide alcohol to minors.

Furthermore, I believe it is important to support interventions that help individuals who may be struggling with alcohol abuse. This could involve partnering with local organizations that provide resources and support for those seeking help. By actively participating in and promoting these initiatives, I aim to reduce the negative impacts of alcohol abuse on individuals and the community as a whole.

Personal experiences have shaped my understanding of the importance of responsible alcohol consumption. I have witnessed firsthand the negative effects of excessive drinking on individuals and their families. Whether it's seeing someone struggle with addiction or experiencing the aftermath of a drunk driving accident, these experiences have reinforced my commitment to promoting responsible alcohol use.

My civic responsibility to my community as it relates to alcohol use and consumption extends beyond my role as a sommelier and brewer. It involves educating the community about alcohol, advocating for responsible drinking policies, and supporting interventions for those struggling with alcohol abuse. Through these efforts, I hope to contribute to a healthier and safer community.
