As a sommelier and brewer, I have had the pleasure of tasting and evaluating numerous whiskies, including the Macallan Classic Cut 2018. I must say that it is indeed a very good whisky, but whether it is considered “good” or not depends on one's personal preferences and expectations.
Starting with the aroma, the Macallan Classic Cut 2018 is undeniably impressive. The nose is filled with a delightful blend of rich and sweet notes, including caramel, vanilla, dried fruits, and a hint of oak. It is a truly inviting and complex scent that immediately grabs your attention and sets the stage for what's to come.
Moving on to the taste, the whisky continues to impress with its well-balanced flavors. The initial sip reveals a burst of sweetness, with flavors of toffee, honey, and dark chocolate dancing on the palate. There is also a subtle spiciness, which adds an extra layer of complexity to the overall profile. The whisky has a medium body, which allows the flavors to shine through without overwhelming the senses.
However, while the Macallan Classic Cut 2018 is undoubtedly delicious, I must admit that it falls slightly short of what I would consider a top shelf whisky. The flavors, although well-balanced, lack the richness and depth that I often associate with truly exceptional whiskies. There is a certain complexity to the whisky, but it doesn't quite reach the level of intricacy that I have experienced with other top shelf offerings.
Moreover, the mouthfeel of the Macallan Classic Cut 2018 is good, but not exceptional. While it is smooth and enjoyable, it lacks the silky texture and lingering finish that I often look for in a top shelf whisky. It doesn't quite leave a lasting impression on the palate, which is something I personally value in a truly outstanding whisky.
That being said, I must reiterate that the Macallan Classic Cut 2018 is still a very good whisky. It possesses a wonderful array of aromas and flavors, and it is certainly a pleasure to drink. However, when comparing it to other whiskies in its price range and category, I feel that it falls just short of the mark for being considered a top shelf offering.
While the Macallan Classic Cut 2018 is undeniably good, it doesn't quite reach the level of greatness that I would expect from a top shelf whisky. It is a wonderfully fragrant and complex Scotch, but the flavors and mouthfeel lack enough richness and depth to truly elevate it to the upper echelons of the whisky world.
