Is El Tesoro a highland or lowland?

Answered by Rodney Landry

El Tesoro is a highly regarded that is often referred to as “the Treasure of Jalisco.” It is crafted in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, a region known for its ideal conditions for tequila production. The Highlands, also known as Los Altos, is located in the central part of the state of Jalisco and is characterized by its high elevation and unique climate.

Unlike the Lowlands, which have a hotter and drier climate, the Highlands offer cooler temperatures and more rainfall. These environmental factors play a significant role in the flavor profile of tequila produced in this region. The high altitude and cooler temperatures slow down the maturation process of the agave plants, resulting in a more complex and flavorful tequila.

I have had the opportunity to visit the Highlands of Jalisco and witness firsthand the meticulous care and attention to detail that goes into crafting El Tesoro tequila. The agave plants are grown in the red clay soils of the Highlands, which impart distinct mineral characteristics to the final product.

The agave plants used in the production of El Tesoro are typically harvested at their peak maturity, which can take up to 10 years. This allows the plants to develop a high sugar content, resulting in a sweeter and more flavorful tequila. The piñas, or hearts of the agave plants, are then roasted in traditional brick ovens to release their juices.

The extracted is fermented and then double distilled using traditional copper pot stills, a method that has been used for generations. This careful distillation process helps to capture the unique flavors and aromas of the agave, resulting in a tequila that is smooth and well-balanced.

The highland terroir, with its cooler temperatures and unique soil composition, contributes to the overall character of El Tesoro. The tequila has a distinctive floral and fruity aroma, with hints of citrus and spices. On the palate, it is smooth and velvety, with flavors of agave, vanilla, and caramel.

El Tesoro is a tequila crafted in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The high altitude, cooler temperatures, and unique soil composition of the region contribute to the distinct flavor profile of this exceptional tequila. Its reputation as “the Treasure of Jalisco” is well-deserved, as it truly embodies the rich heritage and craftsmanship of tequila production in the Highlands.
