What fruit can you put in mead?

Answered by Bill Hernandez

As a sommelier and brewer, I have had the pleasure of experiencing a wide variety of fruits in , also known as melomel. The beauty of melomel is that you can use virtually any fruit you have access to, allowing for endless possibilities and experimentation.

One of my personal favorites is berries, which add a delightful burst of flavor to the mead. Strawberries, with their sweet and slightly tart profile, create a wonderful balance in the mead. Raspberries, known for their intense and slightly acidic taste, lend a vibrant and bold character to the brew. Blackberries, with their deep and rich flavor, add a touch of complexity to the mead. Blueberries, on the other hand, bring a slightly sweet and earthy note that complements the honey base. Currants, whether red or black, offer a unique tartness that can be a pleasant surprise in a melomel.

Stone fruits are also fantastic choices for mead-making. Cherries, with their deep red color and sweet-tart taste, create a luxurious and indulgent mead. Plums, with their juicy and slightly tangy flesh, add a delightful twist to the brew. Peaches, with their fragrant and juicy nature, create a mead that is both refreshing and aromatic. And let's not forget apricots, with their bright and slightly tart flavor, which can add a wonderful complexity to the mead.

I have also had the pleasure of tasting meads made with melons, and they have been nothing short of amazing. Melons, such as cantaloupe, honeydew, or watermelon, can impart a refreshing and subtly sweet taste to the mead. They can be an excellent choice for a light and summery melomel, perfect for sipping on a hot day.

In essence, the possibilities are endless when it comes to fruit selection for mead-making. Whether it's the classic berries, stone fruits, or even melons, each fruit brings its own unique characteristics and flavors to the brew. So don't be afraid to get creative and experiment with different fruits to find your perfect melomel flavor combination. Cheers to the endless variety of fruit-infused meads!
