What happened to Whalers rum?

Answered by Andrew Fritz

Whaler's is still being produced today, despite its lack of quality and questionable reputation. This rum brand has been around for over 50 years and has managed to maintain its Original Dark Rum recipe, which I had the opportunity to review several years ago. However, it seems that Whaler's has not only kept its original recipe but has also expanded its line of rums available in supermarkets.

When I first tried Whaler's Original Dark Rum, I was immediately hit with a strong vanilla flavor. It was like a bomb of sweetness that overwhelmed the palate. While some may enjoy this intense vanilla taste, it was not to my liking. I found it to be overpowering and artificial, lacking the subtleties and complexities that I look for in a quality rum.

Despite my personal opinion, it seems that Whaler's has managed to find a market for its rum. Perhaps it appeals to those who prefer a sweeter and more straightforward flavor profile. Additionally, the affordability and accessibility of Whaler's rum, being available in supermarkets, may contribute to its continued production and sales.

It is worth noting that Whaler's rum does not have a reputation for being a premium or high-quality rum. It is often regarded as a lower-end option, suitable for mixing in rather than sipping on its own. This may be another reason why it has managed to stay on the market, as it can be used as a base spirit for various mixed drinks.

In recent years, Whaler's has expanded its line of rums beyond the Original Dark Rum. They now offer flavored rums such as coconut and pineapple, further catering to those who enjoy sweeter and fruitier profiles. While I have not personally tried these flavored variations, I can only imagine that they may possess a similar artificial and overpowering taste.

It seems that Whaler's rum has managed to maintain its production and sales despite its lack of quality. Its appeal may lie in its affordability, accessibility, and the preferences of those who enjoy sweeter and more straightforward flavors. While it may not be a rum that I would personally choose to drink, it has found its place in the market and continues to be available for those who enjoy it.
