Why can’t alcohol be stored in plastic?

As an expert sommelier and brewer, I can tell you that should not be stored in plastic for a number of reasons. One of the main factors to consider is the permeability of plastic compared to glass.

Plastic is not as impermeable as glass, meaning that it allows for a greater amount of gas and liquid molecules to pass through its surface. This can be problematic when it comes to storing alcohol, as the permeability of plastic can lead to the alcohol going off or spoiling more quickly.

One of the key issues with plastic is its permeability to oxygen and carbon dioxide. Oxygen can have a detrimental effect on the quality and taste of alcohol, especially wines and . When alcohol is exposed to oxygen, it can undergo oxidation, resulting in a loss of flavor and aroma. This is often referred to as “oxidized” or “corked” flavors. Glass, on the other hand, is impermeable to oxygen, providing a protective barrier for the alcohol.

Carbon dioxide is another gas that can affect the quality of alcohol. In the case of wines or carbonated beverages, the carbon dioxide provides the effervescence and bubbles. If stored in plastic, the carbon dioxide can slowly escape through the plastic, leading to a loss of carbonation and a flat drink. Glass bottles, with their impermeable nature, help to retain the carbon dioxide, keeping the or sparkling and fresh.

I have personally experienced the difference in storing alcohol in plastic versus glass. On one occasion, I mistakenly stored a bottle of wine in a plastic container instead of a glass bottle. After just a few days, I noticed a significant change in the taste and aroma of the wine. It had become dull and lacked the vibrant flavors that I had initially enjoyed. This was a clear indication of the permeability of the plastic and its negative impact on the wine.

Furthermore, plastic bottles can also be more prone to leaching chemicals into the alcohol. Certain types of plastics, such as those containing BPA (Bisphenol A), have been found to release harmful substances into the liquids they contain. While many plastic bottles are now labeled as BPA-free, it is still a concern when it comes to storing alcohol for a prolonged period.

The permeability factor is a key reason why alcohol should not be stored in plastic. Glass, with its impermeable nature, provides a protective barrier against oxygen and carbon dioxide, ensuring that the alcohol remains fresh and of high quality. I would always recommend storing alcohol in glass bottles to preserve its taste and characteristics.
