Giant Food, a popular grocery store chain, currently sells alcohol in only three of its 96 stores in Maryland. This limited availability is a result of a law implemented in 1978 that prohibited chain stores and supermarkets from selling alcoholic beverages. However, some stores were exempted from this law and were allowed to continue selling alcohol.
As a sommelier and brewer, I have had the opportunity to visit Giant Food stores in Maryland and have noticed the difference in alcohol availability among them. It is quite disappointing to see such a limited selection of beer and wine in the majority of their stores.
The law that banned chain stores and supermarkets from selling alcohol was likely put in place to protect smaller, independent liquor stores from being overshadowed and potentially put out of business by larger retail chains. While I understand the intention behind this law, it does create an inconvenience for customers who may prefer to do all of their shopping in one place.
It is worth noting that the three Giant Food stores that are allowed to sell alcohol were granted an exception and are known as “grandfathered” stores. These stores were likely already selling alcohol prior to the implementation of the 1978 law and were allowed to continue doing so.
The limited availability of alcohol in Giant Food stores in Maryland can be frustrating for customers who enjoy the convenience of purchasing their groceries and alcohol in one location. It forces them to make separate trips to liquor stores to fulfill their alcoholic beverage needs.
While I understand the reasoning behind the law, it would be beneficial for both customers and Giant Food if the restrictions on alcohol sales were lifted. This would allow customers to have a wider range of options when it comes to purchasing beer and wine, and it would also provide an opportunity for Giant Food to increase their revenue by expanding their alcohol offerings.
