Is hard cider the same as applejack?
Hard cider is not the same as applejack. While both are made from apples, they undergo different processes that result in distinct alcoholic beverages.
Hard cider is made by fermenting apple juice. The apples are crushed and the juice is extracted, which is then left to ferment with the help of yeast. The sugar in the apple juice is converted into alcohol, resulting in a refreshing and mildly alcoholic beverage. Hard cider is typically lower in alcohol content, ranging from 4% to 8% ABV (alcohol by volume), and retains the fruity flavors and characteristics of the apples used.
On the other hand, applejack is a type of brandy that is made by distilling hard cider. Distillation is a process that involves heating the cider to separate the alcohol from the other components. The vaporized alcohol is collected and condensed, resulting in a higher alcohol concentration. Applejack is usually distilled twice to achieve a higher proof, ranging from 70 to 100 proof (35% to 50% ABV).
The process of distillation not only increases the alcohol content but also alters the flavor profile of the beverage. Applejack has a bolder and more concentrated apple flavor compared to hard cider. The distillation process also removes some of the impurities, resulting in a smoother and more refined drink.
