What is the history of J winery?

Answered by James Porterfield

J Vineyards was established in 1986 with the intention of producing exceptional wines using the Traditional Method, as well as high-quality varietal wines. The winery's history is a testament to the dedication and passion of its founder, Judy Jordan, who had a vision of creating world-class wines in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, California.

Judy recognized the potential of the Russian River Valley as a premier winegrowing region. The cool climate, diverse soils, and proximity to the Pacific Ocean all contribute to the unique terroir of the area. She saw an opportunity to produce sparkling wines that could rival those from , France, and showcase the best of what the region had to offer.

To achieve her goal, Judy acquired a plot of land in the heart of the Russian River Valley and planted her first vineyard in 1986. She carefully selected grape varieties that would thrive in the cool climate, such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which are the traditional grapes used in sparkling production.

In the early years, J Vineyards focused primarily on sparkling wines, using the labor-intensive Traditional Method, also known as the méthode champenoise. This traditional winemaking technique involves a secondary fermentation in the bottle, which creates the characteristic effervescence and complexity of sparkling wines. J Vineyards' commitment to crafting sparkling wines of the highest quality quickly earned them a reputation for excellence.

As the winery grew, Judy expanded her portfolio to include still wines made from grapes sourced from select vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley. These varietal wines, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, showcase the diversity of the region and the winemaker's skill in crafting elegant and expressive wines.

Throughout its history, J Vineyards has remained dedicated to sustainable farming practices and environmentally friendly winemaking techniques. The winery has implemented measures to reduce usage, minimize waste, and promote biodiversity in the vineyards. Additionally, J Vineyards has achieved certification as a sustainable winegrower by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.

In 2015, J Vineyards was acquired by E. & J. Gallo Winery, a family-owned company with a long history of producing quality wines. This partnership has allowed J Vineyards to continue its commitment to excellence while benefitting from the resources and expertise of a larger winery.

Today, J Vineyards continues to produce exceptional sparkling wines and varietal wines that reflect the unique character of the Russian River Valley. The winery's dedication to quality, sustainability, and innovation ensures that it will remain a prominent player in the California wine industry for years to come.
