After its closure, Glentauchers distillery remained dormant for many years until it was purchased by a subsidiary of Allied Distillers called Caledonian Malt Distillers in 1989. This acquisition brought a new lease of life to the distillery, and plans were put in place to resume production.
Unfortunately, it took several years before Glentauchers distillery was fully operational again. Production finally resumed in 1992 after extensive renovations and refurbishments were carried out. During this time, the distillery underwent modernization to meet the demands of the whisky market.
Fast forward to the present day, and the ownership of Glentauchers distillery has once again changed hands. The current owner of the distillery is Chivas Brothers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard. Chivas Brothers is a well-known and respected name in the whisky industry, and they have a portfolio of other renowned distilleries under their ownership.
As an expert sommelier and brewer, I have had the opportunity to taste and experience whiskies from various distilleries, including Glentauchers. Each distillery has its own unique character and flavor profile, shaped by its location, production methods, and maturation techniques. Glentauchers, like many other Speyside whiskies, often exhibits fruity and floral notes, with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel.
Glentauchers distillery has had a tumultuous history with changes in ownership and periods of closure. However, it has managed to endure and produce exceptional whiskies under the ownership of Chivas Brothers. The ownership of a distillery can have an impact on its operations and the direction of its whiskies, but ultimately, it is the passion and expertise of the distillers that shape the final product.
